Faithfulness Fridays: The Universe

Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth (Ps 119:90)

God is the Faithful. (Rev 19:11) It is an intrinsic part of His nature.

So today let’s look at how He is a faithful Creator, and Sustainer of the world. (1 Pet 4:19)

In case you haven’t noticed, the universe is complex. Very, very, immensely complex. On the macro scale, galaxies go twirling in a cosmic dance, stars are born and implode; but on the micro level much the same dance is played out, as electrons zing through their orbitals and interact one with another.

Even the most simple, basic things we can think of are complicated. Have you ever studied the building-block of all matter, the confusing entity that is the atom? Or perhaps something smaller than that, the elusive electron? Even “empty space” is itself a bit of a misnomer, as there are a multitude of forces and powers always intersecting and merging. Gravity, strong and weak nuclear forces, and the waves or particles (science hasn’t decided which) of light are always propelling other elements; the universe has a million different components.

And what about those things which we honestly don’t know much about? What is black matter? I know it is necessary to explain the movements of creation, but how do you even study it? This substance is mostly hypothetical, yet accounts for a large part of the universe! Or think of fire. What state even is it? It’s not quite solid, liquid, gas, or even plasma, but rather moves among them all. Of the many things science has observed, very few of them do we actually fully understand.

And yet these pieces and forces must all be in play and cooperate together, or the universe — well, it would simply cease to be. Every single actor must correctly perform his steps, or  the entire show falls apart. But with all these different tempos and partners and solos, how is there no mistake? Why does no dancer trip up? Why does everything keep on running? “Because it just does” is not a sufficient answer.

It is the Lord that keeps everything running. By Him all things consist. (Col 1:17)

He is the great Choreographer. He puts all the dancers in their correct places and their correct paths. He is faithful in ensuring the universe keeps twirling. He is faithful in continually spreading the galaxies across the sky. He is faithful in ensuring the world sits properly on her axis, that Earth’s magnetic field continues to shield us, and that all electrons don’t go flying out into nowhere.

So go look at the Hubble photos. Go dig out your old physics and chemistry books, and be awed by the complexity of all existence.  Walk outside, see the beauty and design of a leaf; think of the winding route that raindrop took to get here; or sit quietly on your little perch of earth, looking out into dark space opening before you, yet filled with lights beyond number and reach. Allow yourself to be overwhelmed with God’s greatness.

Because He is faithful.

Thy faithfulness shalt Thou establish in the very heavens. (Ps 89:2)
