Sonship is only possible through a father. And the quality of a child’s position depends immensely on the quality of the father.
Not everyone has been blessed with a wonderful father, but I have. I adore my mom and him so much. He listens earnestly and patiently as I talk all about life to him, and then talks just as much with me, giving me wisdom and advice. Being silly together is our specialty, singing crazy ditties and dancing crazy dances. And though there are a million reasons I love our relationship, little can compare to being wrapped in a tight, warm hug, listening to his heartbeat close to my ear. He may still be human, but when I am with him I know that I am safe, that I am loved.
And because of God’s love, we have an even greater Father in Him
Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God…(1 John 3:1)
The sons of God! His children, who He cares tenderly for, delights in, and protects. God is not some cold monarch, who cares only about our obedience. He isn’t some distant person, seeing us only as a name and a face. No, we are beloved of God! (Rom 1:7) He numbers every hair on our head (Mat 10:30), catches every tear (Ps 56:8), and understands every trial. (Heb 4:15)
He knows about the nights you cried yourself to sleep. He held you those times the pain was so much you couldn’t bear it. He saw that heart-wrenching text, He heard those words wounding you like weapons, and He felt your despair at the bad doctor’s report. Every dark night. Every tear-stained face. Every moment of rejection and loathing. Every corner of loneliness and despair. Every time your fingernails dug into your palm, clenching so hard just to deal with the hurt. His love was there.
He will never leave us. I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. (Mat 28:20) He mourns with us in our grief and rejoices with us in our delight. Because He is a good father.
Maybe you weren’t blessed with a loving, good father. But your heavenly Father is perfect. You are precious in His sight. He has chosen you as His son. In Jesus, He sees you as perfect; you will never have to worry about not being enough for Him. He rejoices over you with singing. (Zep 3:17)
I will call them My people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. (Rom 9:25,26)
How wonderful is that, that we who have believed on His name, may now become the sons of God! (John 1:12) We don’t have to approach an aloof God with dread, but run to a loving Father with the Spirit of adoption, crying, “Daddy, Father!” (Rom 8:15) He has promised to be our Father, and us His sons and daughters. (2 Cor 6:18)
From being enemies of God, to being His children. From enmity, to beloved. From servants of sin, to precious in His sight. What manner of love is this!
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: (Rom 8:14-16)
